Prophets to Israel (Overview)

2 Kings 13-14. Out of the 16 classical prophets, only three were sent to the northern monarchy of Israel: Jonah, Amos and Hosea. The eighth century BC was a pivotal period for the nation. It was here that they would be sent a powerful word in a brand new form from these special messengers of God; and it was here that they would turn a deaf ear and be cast off forever. Lessons from Jonah

Jonah 1-4.  The story of this wayward prophet’s mission to the city of Nineveh provides profound insights into the ways of Jehovah. Through the entire episode, Jonah showed an incredible level of arrogance and delusion as to his place before Jehovah. Nevertheless, his preaching brought about a mighty revival to the great Assyrian city. Would he learn from his mistakes or would he live the rest of his life as a willful and rebellious prophet? Prepare to Meet Thy God!

Amos 1-4. Israel was in the dangerous position of being in a covenantal relationship with Jehovah while, at the same time, turning her back on Him. “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” the prophet earnestly asks the people. The inference was that the people could not claim to walk with Him while living in a state of rebellion to His authority. A showdown was looming. (44:54) Steve Gallagher

Hatred for the Reprover

Amos 5, 7. Israel had a long history of reacting to the prophet with hostility. Amos was the second to last prophet God would send upon the wayward nation. “The land was unable to endure” his thundering messages. Yet, this was a man who was compelled by great love for the people of Israel. One day, as he poured his heart out to them, he was interrupted by the vile chief priest of Bethel. Amaziah hated everything Amos stood for and demanded he leave Israel. (40:16) Steve Gallagher

A Wayward Wife

Hosea 1-3. The prophet Hosea begins his ministry with an injunction from the Lord: Go find the most promiscuous woman around and marry her! I want to use the shame and pain you will experience through this marriage to show the nation of Israel what it has been like for Me to lavish her with My love. (38:27) Steve Gallagher

God’s Case Against Israel

Hosea 4, 6. When the Lord sized up the nation of Israel, three things stood out glaringly: (1) They had a lack of love for truth; (2) They had a lack of mercy toward each others, and (3) They had a lack of interest in knowing Him. “Your mercy is like the dew that dries up in the midday sun,” the Lord told them. It is mercy–the compulsion to the meet the needs of others–that drives the Kingdom of God. (54:23)  Steve Gallagher
